Quinta
Quinta is the Portuguese name for an estate. It is roughly equivalent to the French word domaine. The quintas of the Port houses have a similar role to the châteaux of Bordeaux. As well as containing historic vineyards whose wines have a clearly defined and recongisable character, these estates are also where the Port houses and families entertain their guests when they visit the Douro Valley. Some of the most famous quintas, such as Taylor's Quinta de Vargellas, are recognised as being among the world's greatest vineyard estates.
