A rare release born from generations of stewardship, more than 80 of patience and over three centuries of vision
Today, Taylor Fladgate unveils its first Very, Very Old White Port (VVOP White), an exceptionally rare wine crafted from White Ports aged for more than eighty years in seasoned oak casks.
More than an extraordinary wine, it embodies a philosophy that has defined Taylor’s for over three centuries: the belief that the finest things cannot be hurried, and that every generation has a responsibility to preserve something of value for those that follow.
Drawn from an exceptionally small reserve of historic White Ports, with some components dating back to 1896, Taylor Fladgate VVOP White is the oldest White Port ever released by the House. It is the result of remarkable ageing, generations of foresight, patience and stewardship.
As appreciation for exceptionally old White Ports continues to grow among collectors and fine wine enthusiasts worldwide, Taylor Fladgate has chosen to unveil one of the House’s rarest and most closely guarded treasures.
The wines that compose Taylor Fladgate VVOP White were laid down by people who would never see them bottled. Each generation that followed inherited the responsibility of caring for them, preserving them and ultimately deciding whether they should one day be shared.
“This is much more than launching a new Port wine. It is the culmination of generations of knowledge, patience and dedication. Every bottle reflects our commitment to preserving our heritage while continuing to invest for future generations.”, says Adrian Bridge, Managing Director. He adds: “Leading a company with more than three centuries of history is both an honour and a responsibility. We are custodians of an extraordinary legacy. Our role is to respect the past while ensuring the House remains relevant and inspiring for generations to come.”
A wine that remembers a different Douro
Taylor Fladgate VVOP White is, in many ways, a living archive. When some of the wines that form this blend were first laid down in cask, there was no electricity across much of the Douro Valley. Grapes were still trodden by foot in granite lagares, and Port wines travelled to Vila Nova de Gaia either aboard traditional barcos rabelos, navigating a river that had not yet been transformed by the hydroelectric dams of the twentieth century or by steam engine trains.
Some of the vineyards from which these wines originated no longer exist. They now lie beneath the waters of the Douro. The landscape has changed. The people have changed. The world has changed. Yet these wines have continued to mature patiently in oak, carrying with them aromas, flavours and memories from another age. Once these historic reserves are gone, they can never be recreated.
For David Guimaraens, Taylor Fladgate Head Winemaker and Master Blender, this release represents the continuation of a responsibility that stretches back through generations of Taylor’s blenders. His role was not simply to create a unique blend. It was to understand the history of the components and to create a wine that would make his ancestors proud.
“When you’re working with Port wines that have been ageing for decades, you’re making decisions that honour the work of people who are no longer here. That’s both a privilege and a tremendous responsibility, says David. He adds “Time has given this wine extraordinary depth while preserving remarkable elegance and freshness. Achieving that balance is what makes wines like this so rare.”
The Port
Taylor Fladgate VVOP White displays a luminous amber-gold colour and remarkable aromatic depth.
The bouquet unfolds in successive layers of dried apricot, almond biscotti, candied orange peel, wild lavender, jasmine and orange blossom.
The palate reveals roasted hazelnuts, almonds, tonka bean, blood orange, honeycomb and saffron, supported by vibrant acidity and delicate salinity that leads to an exceptionally long, elegant finish. Like all truly great old wines, it rewards patience. Every minute in the glass reveals another chapter.
Reflecting the rarity of the wine, Taylor’s commissioned a bespoke crystal decanter developed in partnership with Vista Alegre, one of Portugal’s most distinguished luxury houses. The presentation case has been entirely redesigned for this release, combining contemporary elegance with carefully selected certified materials chosen for both their exceptional quality and sustainability credentials, a reflection of Taylor’s enduring commitment to craftsmanship, authenticity and responsible stewardship.
Taylor Fladgate VVOP White will be available in extremely limited quantities through selected fine wine merchants worldwide. One extraordinary chapter in the continuing story of Taylor Fladgate.
