“Pablo Picasso. Vollard Suite.”: the collection of 100 etchings will be exhibited for the first time in Porto, from 30 May to 11 September, at Palácio das Artes.

Taylor’s Port wine establishment joins Museu da Misericórdia do Porto in bringing an unprecedented exhibition of 100 etchings created by Pablo Picasso, between 1930 and 1937. The collection, owned by the Mapfre Foundation, makes an appearance in Porto, by initiative of Charlotte Crapts, art commissioner.

The collection of etchings, considered one of the most important of the twentieth century, was created for the art dealer Ambroise Vollard, but due to his untimely death in a car accident, in July 1939, it was only several years later that it was finally exhibited to the public. So, this is a rare opportunity to see this complete collection of the Spanish artist, only possessed by a few museums of the world, namely the National Gallery in Washington, the British Museum in London, MOMA in New York and the Musée National Picasso-Paris.

For Adrian Bridge, managing director of Taylor’s Port and organiser of the exhibition, “It’s an enormous privilege to bring this exhibition of a universal artist, promoting art in Porto and enhancing the city’s interest as a tourist destination. We believe that the bonding of people with our city, with its cultural and heritage exponents, among which Port wine, is crucial and will clearly be bolstered by this virtuous association with one of its most emblematic symbols”.

Entrance to the exhibition costs 10 euros, and is free for children up to 12 years old. Young people aged 12 to 17 years old and students are given a 50% discount on the entrance fee. At the end of the visit, as an integral part of the experience and included in the ticket, Taylor’s Port invites adult visitors to taste a glass of Port wine at Taylor’s Lounge, next to the exhibition rooms.

The exhibition will be on display from 30 May to 11 September, at Palácio das Artes, in the midst of downtown Porto. Tickets can be purchased at the museum or directly on www.pablopicassoporto.com
